“이방인Strange”은 영국소설가 더글라스 아담스의 “은하수를 여행하는 히치하이커를 위한 안내서” (1979)에 영감을 받아, 같은 나라에서 태어났지만 전혀 다른 환경에서 살아온 두 사람의 서로 다른 고독함의 해석을 기반한 콜라보레이션이다. 현대인의 삶에서 필수불가결적인 요소로 야기되는 고독이란 감정의 양면적인 해석에서 그 공통점과 차이점을 인지하는 것이 어떻게 우리 모두에게 위로가 될수 있을까에 대한 이야기다. 공간 혹은 건축의 물성과 속성, 그리고 역사를 통찰하여 사회참여적 건축가가 되기를 지향하는 이미경과, 회화언어의 다양성을 통해 순간의 휘발성과 시간의 흔적, 기억의 끊임없는 진화를 탐구하는 김재현은 각각의 매체에 대한 통찰 및 대담을 통해 프로젝트 부름의 공간을 고독의 양면성을 체험할수 있는 곳으로 탈바꿈을 시키고자 한다.

우리는 ‘이방인’으로서 느끼는 상태를 두가지로 정의했다.

내려다보는 시선을 유도하는 이 설치작업들은 작품을 보고 경험하는 관객들을 바라보는 관점을 시작점으로 삼아 제작되었다. 이작품은 조금 높은 곳에 올라가 있고, 조금 낮은 것을 쳐다보는 제스처와 시선이 공간에 채워질때 완성된다. 바라보고 보여지며, 비추고 비춰지는 잔상들이 작품에 동요될때, 그리고 그사이에서 내 것과 남의 것, 익숙한 것과 낯선 것을 인식하는 순간 우리는 이방인이 된다. 괴리감이 초대한 그곳에서 우리는 외로움과 가장 가까워진다.
English:
Stranger is a collaborative project by Mikyung Lee and Ted Kim, based on their paradoxical interpretation of loneliness and the British novelist Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1979). Born in the same country but had distinctively different upbringing and lifestyle, they take on the notion of estrangement and discuss what it means for their contemporaries to experience the chronic state of isolation. The artists assume that recognising the commonality of such experience provides the spectators a haven of solace.
Lee and Kim define the state of alienation in two different ways:
“I am lonely.”
Feeling foreign from the hegemony of society, followed by the desire to communicate with others
“I am lonely, too.”
Feeling indifferent to the state of detachment after a series of farewell, and seeking for individuals with similar experience
Both wooden and LED-lit podium and the film projection onto a tiled floor are designed to provoke an act of looking. Through these layers of viewpoint, the spectator experiences a divergence as the space gradually embraces the silhouettes of occupants. From shadows to a reflection; the complete void to a loop of ambient sound, Stranger attempts to achieve equilibrium between the familiar and the foreign. And there, you are already a few strange steps closer to loneliness.
